The following essay will conduct a comparative study of the Rubaiyat of ʿUmar Khayyam Nīshābūrī, a Persian-speaking poet and philosopher of the sixth century A.H, and the sonnets of William Shakespeare, the national poet and prominent playwright of the sixteenth century in England, with an emphasis on the components of Romanticism. Both poets have addressed themes such as love, death, nature, the pursuit of spoils, and the passage of time in their works, which are consistent with the characteristics of Romanticism, including sentimentality, imagination, praise of nature, and reflection on human destiny. The aim of this study is to analyze the content of Khayyam's quatrains and Shakespeare's sonnets in order to identify the similarities and differences between these two poets in reflecting the Romantic spirit. Khayyam, with a philosophical and skeptical view of existence, raises fundamental questions about the meaning of life and, in concise language, praises nature and the moment. In contrast, Shakespeare, with dramatic and romantic expression, depicts beauty, love, and decay in his sonnets. The findings of the research indicate that although Khayyam's approach is more rational and based on reason; Shakespeare's approach is completely emotional, dramatic and based on feeling, both have been quite successful in depicting the Romantic world. This comparative study reveals how Eastern and Western literature, despite cultural and historical differences, converge in the concepts of Romanticism. This study not only helps to better understand the literary connections between these two poets, but also demonstrates the global influence of Romanticism on classical works.
