Contemporary literature in Iran and Turkey, particularly women’s poetry, provides an important space for representing concepts such as suffering, hope, resistance, and confrontation with structures of power. Among these, the poetry of Simin Behbahani and Gülten Akın, as two prominent female poets from distinct cultural contexts, exemplifies the intersection of lived experiences with social and political realities. A comparative examination of their works reveals that motifs as recurring and meaningful elements play a central role in shaping their poetic worlds.
This study employs a qualitative method and comparative content analysis to investigate the representation of social motifs in the poetry of these two poets. It examines shared elements such as poverty, women’s suffering, inequality, structural violence, war, homeland, despair, longing, and resistance. The findings indicate that Behbahani, through an emotional tone, metaphorical language, and sensory imagery, portrays poverty in urban, familial, and female contexts, transforming it from an economic issue into an ethical, emotional, and gendered experience. Women’s suffering in her poetry is often intertwined with sensory metaphors, domestic objects, the body, and emotional relationships. In contrast, Akın employs a documentary, realistic, and critical language, viewing poverty as a structural, historical, and political phenomenon intertwined with ethnic discrimination, forced migration, governmental violence, racial inequality. Women’s suffering in her poetry is understood as a collective and historical experience. Differences are also evident in the representation of war and violence: Behbahani portrays war as a tangible phenomenon, whereas Akın presents it as a structural and intergenerational cycle of political violence.
